Sea Marconi is the lead partner of the RECIPROCO project – Eco-sustainable Recycling of structural fibres from Industrial Composites and Production of Competitive materials in a circular supply chain, an initiative co-funded under the PR FESR Piemonte 2021/2027 – SWIch Call 2024. The project brings together nine partners (see below) from industry and research, with the aim of developing in Piedmont a circular supply chain dedicated to the recovery and valorisation of end-of-life composite materials.

RECIPROCO focuses on two main areas. On one hand, the recovery of glass and carbon fibres from thermosetting composites through thermochemical conversion processes; on the other, the transformation of thermoplastic composites into reusable materials for production processes. The objective is to demonstrate the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of an advanced recycling model, capable of reducing the use of virgin raw materials and generating new industrial value in the region.

During the project, pilot plants will be developed, along with material characterisation activities and demonstrator components for applications in the automotive and construction sectors. In parallel, environmental impacts and process costs will be assessed to verify the competitiveness of the proposed solutions against conventional scenarios.

For Sea Marconi, RECIPROCO represents a further development of its applied research path in thermochemical conversion and end-of-life material valorisation, in line with an approach oriented towards industrial innovation and concrete sustainability.

Marelli Suspension Systems Italy S.p.A. (Large Enterprise — Turin) — automotive end-user; produces and validates new components (suspension uprights, shock absorber caps) using recycled material.

Environment Park S.p.A. – EnviPark (Large Enterprise — Turin) — fibre surface treatment via plasma processes to optimise fibre-matrix adhesion.

HAIKI COBAT S.p.A. Società Benefit (Medium Enterprise — Rome; extra-regional partner) — maps end-of-life composite material flows at regional, national and European level.

Politecnico di Torino – POLITO (Research Organisation — Turin; DIMEAS and DIGEP departments) — material characterisation, LCA and LCC analysis, sizing of the regional supply chain plant.

The BioEnPro H2O project, led by Sea Marconi, is part of the Spoke 2 of NODES (Digital and Sustainable North West), an innovation ecosystem that promotes the green and digital transition in Northwestern Italy. NODES brings together universities, research centers, and businesses, with Spoke 2 focusing on technologies for the ecological transition and the circular economy.

BioEnPro H2O researches and develops new prototypes and demonstrators (TRL6) capable of transforming the residual “resources” produced by communities (compost, sewage sludge, biomass and organic waste, landfill leachate, etc.) into “clean” water (for industrial, firefighting, irrigation use, etc.), bioenergy, bio-based products, algal and/or aquatic biomass, and biohydrogen.

Sea Marconi is gearing up to be a key player in the Chilometro Blu project (CH2ILOMETRO BLU), an ambitious challenge for circular economy in the West Area of Turin.
Chilometro Blu is part of a broader project program, led by the Territorial Pact of the West Area of Turin, which achieved the prestigious second place nationally in the call for proposals by the Ministry of Industry and Made in Italy (d.dir. July 30, 2021) obtaining a funding of 10 million euros.

Promoted by the City of Collegno, Chilometro Blu represents a unique opportunity to ground a vast experience gained in the territory in the field of urban and industrial waste management (resources), research, technological innovation, and sustainable development. The project aims to create a reference center for circular bioeconomy, actively involving the University of Turin, Polytechnic of Turin, companies, trade unions, and employer organizations.

Sea Marconi, along with other prominent entities such as Snam, Saipem, Barricalla, Gruppo Cidiu, PUNCH Hydrocells Amma, Asja, will be an integral part of this project, contributing with its know-how and advanced solutions in the field of circular bioeconomy. In particular, Sea Marconi’s BioEnPro H2 project will be integrated into the context of Chilometro Blu, aiming for hydrogen and food production from intensified greenhouses with a negative CO2 balance, without the use of electrolyzers. This project, which continues the research and innovations born in the previous project BIOENPRO4TO, has the potential to find applications at national, European, and international levels once industrialized.

The success of the Chilometro Blu project is the result of synergistic collaboration between institutions, business and trade union organizations, universities, and industrial groups, with Sea Marconi playing a key role in promoting circular economy and technological innovation in the West Area of Turin.

During the visit, Sea Marconi illustrated its peculiarities of innovation, sustainability, and industrial development both in relation to its core business (supporting the management of electrical equipment with insulating fluids) and, above all, in relation to research and innovation projects, with a particular focus on  BIOENPRO4TO.

On September 27th, a meeting of the scientific project committee was held at the headquarters of Sea Marconi in Collegno. The meeting took place with the Wordcafe mode.
What is it?
The Worldcafè is a meeting mode inspired by old cafes, creating a work environment that inspires participants and invites them to a free and passionate discussion. This technique facilitates the exchange of innovative and unconventional ideas thanks to a very light form of moderation and the guidance of some general questions.
Participants are divided into different discussion tables and are invited to exchange every 20/30 minutes; the facilitator has the task of briefing newcomers on what has already been discussed and of gathering from these new ideas. Like in cafes, people can write and draw on the tablecloth (paper), drink and eat something during the meeting.

The members of the scientific committee of the BIOENPRO4TO project welcomed the Worldcafè procedure very positively and openly shared impressions, points of view and knowledge, which were noted on colored post-it notes and put in the minutes of the meeting. What emerged has concretely clarified some technical aspects common to some WPs and at the same time allowed updating on reference standards, terms and definitions useful for the rest of the project.

What brought Japanese students to Sea Marconi? The occasion has matured thanks to the partnerships between Sea Marconi and DISAFA* within the BIOENPRO4TO project, of which Sea Marconi is the coordinator.

BIOENPRO4TO perfectly responds to the areas of interest of Japanese students, who intend to learn about the agroforestry world internationally, evaluating not only primary production but also all aspects related to agriculture, especially those related to recovery processes energy and circular bioeconomy.

The students, coordinated by Professor Luisella Roberta Celi, listened with interest to the presentation of the BIOENPRO4TO project, appreciating above all the complete circularity of the system: organic matrices, also coming from agroforestry activities, can be used and enhanced transforming them into energy sources and new matrices and new products with a high soil conditioner, fertilizer and / or biostimulant. This responds to increasingly urgent demands, opening up new challenges for a circular conception of the production system: finding new sources of alternative energy, transforming waste into economically exploitable products, restoring nutrients taken from crops to soil, recycling nutrients such as phosphorus , whose resources are running out dramatically.

We underline that the entire afternoon has been reserved for the presentation of the projects that were suitable (given the recent provision of the Piedmont Region) to receive financial support from the POR FESR 2014/2020, Regional Operational Plan of the European Regional Development Fund. At 3.00 pm the presentation of the BIOENPRO4TO project, Smart solutions for smart communities of which Sea Marconi is the leader, is planned.

BIOENPRO4TO will deal with the areas of management, treatment and enhancement of urban and industrial waste as well as waste water. The key to the project is the integration between innovative sciences and technologies, heterogeneous and often distant from one another, such as mechanochemistry, biochemistry, thermochemistry, horticulture.
Not only that, it will be a determining factor to have selected excellent partners for each domain.
