From 23 to 28 August 2026, Sea Marconi will attend the CIGRE Paris Session 2026, the world’s leading event dedicated to large electrical networks, held at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. Visit us at Booth B244, where our team will be available to discuss the latest solutions for power transformer life-cycle management.

What we will present at the booth

Diagnosis, prognosis and integrated treatment
At the core of our offering are diagnosis and prognosis services for the technological pathologies affecting power transformers, combined with integrated treatment solutions designed to extend equipment lifespan and reduce the risk of failure.

Continuous monitoring for dry-type transformers: a genuine market novelty
We will preview a new device for continuous health monitoring of dry-type (resin) transformers — a solution addressing a significant technology gap in a fast-growing segment, driven also by Eco-design regulations favouring more compact cooling geometries.

Compatibility testing between insulating liquids and construction materials
An increasingly critical issue for those managing electrical assets: the compatibility between dielectric fluids (mineral oils, natural and synthetic esters) and the materials that make up the equipment — copper, silver, aluminium, insulating paper, resins, varnishes, gaskets and elastomers. Untested interactions can lead to premature fluid degradation, metal corrosion (Cu2S, Ag2S), accelerated elastomer ageing, and hard-to-detect phenomena such as corrosive sulphur and stray gassing.

Our approach, compliant with and going beyond international standards ASTM D3455, IEC 62535 and IEC 60296, combines immersion and accelerated thermal ageing tests, miscibility testing, chemical fingerprinting (FTIR, GC/MS, GC/PFPD, ICP-OES, SEM/EDX) and custom multi-material screening — supporting the client from protocol definition through to results interpretation.

How to attend

Access to the exhibition area is free of charge, subject to online registration as a visitor: https://cigre2026.site.calypso-event.net/en/registration/visitor.htm

See you in Paris.

On 18 and 19 June, the European project RETROTRAFO met in Santander for the Project Meeting and the Mid-term Review Meeting, hosted by the GITEP research group at the University of Cantabria, the project coordinator. Sea Marconi takes part as an industrial partner — and in Santander it played a leading role.
The project
RETROTRAFO is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe – Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Staff Exchanges programme (Grant Agreement No. 101182948). The consortium brings together 28 partners in 17 countries: universities, research centres, transformer manufacturers, utilities, diagnostic companies and insulating fluid specialists.
The aim is to develop knowledge and technology for the retrofilling of power transformers with biodegradable and recycled dielectric fluids: replacing mineral oil in transformers that have been in service for years with more sustainable alternatives, verifying that they can continue operating safely and efficiently. A path that fits within the circular economy, reducing environmental impact and strengthening the resilience of energy grids.
The project continues and expands the work started with BIOTRAFO (Horizon 2020 MSCA-RISE, 2019–2021), also coordinated by the University of Cantabria, which laid the scientific groundwork for the use of ester fluids in power transformers. Sea Marconi was also a consortium partner in BIOTRAFO.
Sea Marconi’s contribution
On 18 June, Sea Marconi presented a case study on the retrofilling of a power (furnace) transformer with ester fluids, building on the know-how already developed in BIOTRAFO.
On 19 June, during the Plenary Meeting, Sea Marconi (Vander Tumiatti) also submitted to the project coordinator a proposal to amend RETROTRAFO’s extended title, to broaden its scope of application to high-criticality assets such as AI data centers. The proposed title:
“Development of knowledge and technology to implement retrofilling in power transformers using biodegradable or recycled fluids and fostering circular economy for sustainable equipment and resilient assets such as AI data centers”
Behind the proposal lies a profound technological shift: next-generation data centers are adopting direct processor cooling technologies through immersion in insulating fluids, to manage “hyper” power densities — industry projections indicate that racks could exceed 1 MW of power each by 2027-2028, compared with the current 120-150 kW of the most advanced AI racks. It is a fast-growing market, with aggregated estimates from several analysts (McKinsey, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs) placing CAPEX investment between USD 5,000 and 7,500 billion over the 2030-2032 horizon, of which the cooling segment alone accounts for around 15-20%.
For Sea Marconi, which has 58 years of global experience, this scenario represents both an international-scale technological challenge and a concrete opportunity: applying to a new field of application its expertise in diagnosis, prognosis and targeted fluid treatment, with the asset and risk management approach that has always characterised the company’s work.

Fifty years ago, on 10 July 1976, the explosion of reactor A101 at the ICMESA plant in Meda (Milan) released 2,3,7,8-TCDD, known as “Seveso dioxin”, into the environment. It was the world’s most severe case of contamination by this substance and marked a definitive turning point in the global perception of environmental risk, contributing to the first European Directives on PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) issued that same year — a substance now classified among the POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) under the 2001 Stockholm Convention.

Sea Marconi’s role in the technological response

In December 1982, Senator Luigi Noè, head of the Special Office for Seveso of the Lombardy Region, invited Sea Marconi to propose a solution for detoxifying the dioxin. The company, founded in Collegno in 1968 by Vander Tumiatti, took up the challenge: in 1983, working with the European Joint Research Centre in Ispra (Prof. Sergio Facchetti) and the University of Turin (Prof. Pietro Tundo), Sea Marconi became the first in the world to experimentally validate, both in the laboratory and in the field, the dehalogenation and detoxification of Seveso dioxin through CDP Process®, patented the year before.

From dioxin to PCBs in transformers

Seveso dioxin and PCBs belong to the same family of pollutants: both are POPs under the Stockholm Convention, sharing toxicity and environmental persistence. CDP Process®, validated on the most extreme case ever recorded, is the same technology Sea Marconi uses today to treat PCBs in the insulating fluids of electrical transformers, in service even under load, with no need to empty the equipment. Classified by Italy’s Ministry of Environment as Best Available Technique in 2007, CDP Process® is now recognized as BAT/BEP in UNIDO-GEF projects supporting the objectives of the Stockholm Convention, and applied in over 50 countries.

The study day

Fifty years after that event, Sea Marconi and the University of Turin are jointly promoting an interdisciplinary study day to revisit this history and examine, with contributions from experts in chemistry, law, linguistics and artificial intelligence, the path that led from the dioxin crisis to today’s global technological responses.

? Thursday 9 July 2026, 8:30 AM
? Aula Magna of the Rectorate, University of Turin, via Verdi 8

Speakers include Vander Tumiatti and Silvia Cerlesi, presenting on CHEM & AI and on CDP Process applied to Seveso dioxin.

How to attend
The event is open for in-person attendance. A webinar broadcast (up to 1,000 attendees, view-only) is also available at the following link:

On 13 May 2025, Milan hosted the CEI – CT10 Study Day “How to Extend the Life of Transformers“. More than 170 industry professionals — utilities, industries, manufacturers and laboratories — took part in a day of technical discussion dedicated to one of the most pressing challenges in energy network asset management.

SEA Marconi participated as official sponsor and technical speaker, presenting experimental data, innovative methodologies and real-world case histories.

TransfoCare: From Pathological Assessment to Integrated Treatment

Vander Tumiatti presented SEA Marconi’s approach to electrical asset life cycle management, built on the triad Diagnosis / Prognosis / Treatment. There is no real extension of service life without an integrated reading of the asset’s pathological profile. Insulating fluid, solid insulation, operational history — all contribute to defining the true health status of the transformer and the most effective actions to extend its life under safe and resilient conditions. In his presentation, Tumiatti noted that “a major European utility (RTE) has committed 100 billion euros over the next 15 years to grid resilience, and has selected SEA Marconi’s Apollo technology — with an initial order of 6 units and an option for 5 more — as the cornerstone of its transformer treatment strategy.”

The SRI Protocol: A New Tool for Assessing Fluid Impact on Cellulose Insulation

Giuseppe Pecoraro presented the results of a laboratory study conducted on six mineral insulating fluids taken from transformers in service. The study demonstrates that the insulating fluid is not neutral with respect to the ageing of kraft paper — the true biological clock of the transformer.

The SRI Protocol (Sustainable Resilience Impact), a new experimental diagnostic and prognostic method developed by SEA Marconi, enables measurement of fluid aggressiveness towards cellulose insulation through assessment of the degree of polymerisation (DP). Experimental results: following SEA Marconi integrated treatment, the average paper DP increased by +83.6%, with a direct impact on the extension of the asset’s thermal life.

Smart Nosy: The Monitoring System for Resin Transformers

In the exhibition area, significant attention was also drawn to Smart Nosy, the SEA Marconi system dedicated to health monitoring of resin transformers with preventive risk alert functionality. A solution designed to identify anomalies at an early stage, improving operational safety, plant reliability and continuity of service.

5 May 2026 — Vander Tumiatti, diagnostics, circular economy, energy transition

From 26 to 30 April 2026, Lyon hosted GeoFuture Lyon 2026 — Congrès international des partenariats scientifiques et de l’investissement durable: five days structured around four thematic pillars — Geomatics, Earth Sciences, Space, Energy — with scientific, institutional and economic delegations from Europe, Africa and the Middle East, under the patronage of the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Among the voices at the opening ceremony on 27 April, at the Hôtel de Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and at the closing workshop on 30 April dedicated to the Europe–Africa–Middle East partnership, was that of Vander Tumiatti, Founder of SEA Marconi, invited by the organisers to share his perspective on the energy transition and sustainable investments.

The Global Leadership in Energy Innovation & Sustainability Award

During the congress, the Union Euro-Arabe de Géomatique (UEAG) presented Vander Tumiatti with the Global Leadership in Energy Innovation & Sustainability Award, an international recognition for his commitment to energy innovation and sustainability. The award is linked to Tumiatti’s entrepreneurial and scientific journey: since 1968, the year SEA Marconi was founded, he has contributed to the development of independent methodologies for the diagnosis and treatment of electrical transformers and insulating fluids, taking the company into more than 100 countries worldwide.

“The Power of Knowledge and the Energy of Transformation”

In the opening scientific session, chaired by Prof. Mohamed Naceur Chamem, Tumiatti shared an industrial experience spanning 58 years, rooted in SEA Marconi’s signature medical metaphor: the transformer as a living organism, managed through independent protocols of Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment.

His presentation covered the database built over nearly six decades — more than 89,000 transformers recorded across 80 countries and 1.23 million tests performed — and the technological and European research developments that carry his vision forward today: the patented multi-treatment unit i³ Apollo Fluid Care (2026), with potential applications in data centres and aerospace, and the BIOTRAFO and RETROTRAFO projects (Horizon Europe, 28 partners from 17 countries) dedicated to biodegradable fluids and retrofilling.

“Today’s Commitment for Future Generations”: with these closing words, Tumiatti summarised the vision that continues to guide his work — the same one that, in Lyon in 2026, received international recognition.

Sea Marconi is the lead partner of the RECIPROCO project – Eco-sustainable Recycling of structural fibres from Industrial Composites and Production of Competitive materials in a circular supply chain, an initiative co-funded under the PR FESR Piemonte 2021/2027 – SWIch Call 2024. The project brings together nine partners (see below) from industry and research, with the aim of developing in Piedmont a circular supply chain dedicated to the recovery and valorisation of end-of-life composite materials.

RECIPROCO focuses on two main areas. On one hand, the recovery of glass and carbon fibres from thermosetting composites through thermochemical conversion processes; on the other, the transformation of thermoplastic composites into reusable materials for production processes. The objective is to demonstrate the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of an advanced recycling model, capable of reducing the use of virgin raw materials and generating new industrial value in the region.

During the project, pilot plants will be developed, along with material characterisation activities and demonstrator components for applications in the automotive and construction sectors. In parallel, environmental impacts and process costs will be assessed to verify the competitiveness of the proposed solutions against conventional scenarios.

For Sea Marconi, RECIPROCO represents a further development of its applied research path in thermochemical conversion and end-of-life material valorisation, in line with an approach oriented towards industrial innovation and concrete sustainability.

SEA Marconi has just completed a dehalogenation treatment (performed on-load, with the transformer energised and under load) at a hydroelectric power plant in Romania.

These activities are routine for SEA Marconi, which performs 20 to 25 transformer treatments simultaneously every day in different areas of the world. In this specific case, however, the intervention was successfully carried out despite particularly severe environmental conditions, as shown in the video published by our partner Energotech on LinkedIn, with temperatures down to –16 °C, heavy snowfall, ice and a steep snow-covered access road.

Dehalogenation is the treatment that allows the reduction and removal of PCB content from insulating fluids down to the values prescribed by international regulations. The 7-day activity involved a 16 MVA – 110 kV transformer containing 12,560 kg of insulating oil.

The treatment, performed using mobile and modular units designed and built by SEA Marconi, reduced PCB contamination below 50 mg/kg, without replacing the oil charge and without generating contaminated waste, ensuring operational continuity and regulatory compliance.

With over 50 years of international experience, SEA Marconi confirms its leadership in addressing the PCB issue, applying the best available technique and the best environmental practice to protect safety, assets and the environment.

My Transfo on the Road is the local extension of the international My Transfo conference, promoted and organised by Sea Marconi since 2002. After more than twenty years of international dialogue and technical exchange, the My Transfo experience is now moving closer to local markets with a focused, one-day professional format.

The first stop of this new initiative will take place in Lyon on 10 June 2026, with an event entirely delivered in French and dedicated to transformers and insulating fluids.

My Transfo on the Road is designed to bring local markets the solutions, expertise and know-how developed within the international My Transfo conference. The knowledge shaped and shared by leading global experts at My Transfo is transferred and made available to local contexts through the My Transfo on the Road format.

A focused format, high technical value

The Lyon edition offers an intensive one-day programme conceived to maximise participants’ time and professional value. Topics under development include sampling of insulating liquids, transformer hydration pathologies, insulating fluid diagnostics, stray water phenomena, rehabilitation of transformer fleets, laboratory data management, and electrical testing best practices.

The event brings together a qualified local network of utilities, engineers, laboratories, manufacturers and technical experts, fostering direct dialogue and concrete exchange on real operational challenges.

A local event, aligned with the My Transfo vision

My Transfo on the Road maintains the core principles of the My Transfo platform: knowledge sharing, scientific rigour, independence of content and a strong connection between research and field experience. The local format allows these values to be expressed in the national language, with topics and speakers closely connected to regional contexts.

With Lyon 2026, Sea Marconi launches the first step of a broader roadmap that will extend My Transfo on the Road to other European and international markets. The second stop of the initiative is already scheduled to take place in Madrid in October 2026.
