On 13 May 2025, Milan hosted the CEI – CT10 Study Day “How to Extend the Life of Transformers“. More than 170 industry professionals — utilities, industries, manufacturers and laboratories — took part in a day of technical discussion dedicated to one of the most pressing challenges in energy network asset management.

SEA Marconi participated as official sponsor and technical speaker, presenting experimental data, innovative methodologies and real-world case histories.

TransfoCare: From Pathological Assessment to Integrated Treatment

Vander Tumiatti presented SEA Marconi’s approach to electrical asset life cycle management, built on the triad Diagnosis / Prognosis / Treatment. There is no real extension of service life without an integrated reading of the asset’s pathological profile. Insulating fluid, solid insulation, operational history — all contribute to defining the true health status of the transformer and the most effective actions to extend its life under safe and resilient conditions. In his presentation, Tumiatti noted that “a major European utility (RTE) has committed 100 billion euros over the next 15 years to grid resilience, and has selected SEA Marconi’s Apollo technology — with an initial order of 6 units and an option for 5 more — as the cornerstone of its transformer treatment strategy.”

The SRI Protocol: A New Tool for Assessing Fluid Impact on Cellulose Insulation

Giuseppe Pecoraro presented the results of a laboratory study conducted on six mineral insulating fluids taken from transformers in service. The study demonstrates that the insulating fluid is not neutral with respect to the ageing of kraft paper — the true biological clock of the transformer.

The SRI Protocol (Sustainable Resilience Impact), a new experimental diagnostic and prognostic method developed by SEA Marconi, enables measurement of fluid aggressiveness towards cellulose insulation through assessment of the degree of polymerisation (DP). Experimental results: following SEA Marconi integrated treatment, the average paper DP increased by +83.6%, with a direct impact on the extension of the asset’s thermal life.

Smart Nosy: The Monitoring System for Resin Transformers

In the exhibition area, significant attention was also drawn to Smart Nosy, the SEA Marconi system dedicated to health monitoring of resin transformers with preventive risk alert functionality. A solution designed to identify anomalies at an early stage, improving operational safety, plant reliability and continuity of service.

My Transfo 2025 took place at the SERMIG – Arsenal of Peace in Turin, a symbolic venue born from the transformation of a former military site into a place of peace, solidarity and innovation.
A meaningful setting for an event that celebrates knowledge as the true energy of transformation.

With 190 participants, 96 companies and 25 countries represented, this was the most successful edition ever.
But beyond the numbers, what truly defined My Transfo 2025 was its human value: the curiosity, generosity and openness of those who shared their expertise for the benefit of others.

Organised by Sea Marconi – Sustainable solutions for oil-filled transformers, My Transfo has been, for over twenty years, the meeting point between science, industry and innovation in the world of transformers and insulating liquids.
Here, knowledge is shared, experience is exchanged, and new ideas take shape through collaboration.

This year also marked an important step forward in inclusion, with the highest participation of women and young professionals under 30 ever recorded.
It reflects a diverse and collaborative community where the sharing of knowledge becomes a human gesture before being a technical one.

The claim of this edition, “Power of Knowledge, Energy of Transformation”, perfectly captures the event’s essence: knowledge as the force that unites, innovates, and drives change.

“My Transfo is not just a conference, it’s a living community. It shows that sharing knowledge means generating value.”
— Vander Tumiatti, Founder of Sea Marconi

Not only a member of Committee 10, but also Co-Officer and Assistant Secretary at the IEC TC 10 from 2000 to 2022, where Tumiatti played a key role in promoting dissemination and culture of the sector (www.mytransfo.com) in the field of insulating fluids for transformers and other electrical equipment strategic for the resilience of the energy system.
The “Alessandro Volta” Award is a testimony to his commitment, with over 100 scientific articles of which he is the author and co-author, around 50 international patents and numerous honours already awarded to him.

Upon receiving the recognition, Vander Tumiatti expressed with all sincerity how the award represented an honor and at the same time a burden to continue the Italian commitment to being an independent, innovative entrepreneur with an international vision; “This award is the result of years of hard work and dedication, and I accept it with gratitude towards the CEI and the entire community that has contributed to the progress of our industry“.

The “Alessandro Volta” Award is a tribute not only to Vander Tumiatti, but also to Sea Marconi’s constant commitment to promoting innovation and excellence in the life cycle management of electrical equipment with insulating fluids.

The Drapò project ended with excellent results. The project aimed at studying systems and components for energy and energy efficiency recovery in motor vehicles, or more simply put, at studying materials to be used in cars in the near future.
The project, coordinated by the Fiat Research Centre, was funded by the 2007/2013 RDEF REGIONAL OPERATIONAL PROGRAMME “Regional Competitiveness and Employment” and was attended by more than 40 partners among private companies, research centres and Universities in Piedmont.
Returning to the results of the project, Sea Marconi is very proud of this experience: during the final event, held at the Fiat Research Centre on 26 October 2015, we showed the system thanks to which, for the first time, it was possible to make high added value carbon nano-tubular structures from specific waste carbon matrixes such as used tires for example.
The “Carbon Nanotubes” manufactured by Sea Marconi are the result of about 36 months of research and development during which we have used extraordinary skills, peculiar in that they are interdisciplinary, a feature without which such a result would never have been reached.

The title of our article is “IEC 62697-2012: State of the art methods for quantification of DBDS and other corrosive sulfur compounds in unused and used insulating liquids” and other corrosive sulfur compounds in unused and used insulating liquids” di Tumiatti, V. Roggero, C. ; Tumiatti, M. ; Di Carlo, S. ; Maina, R. per la Sea Marconi e Kapila, S. dell’università del Missouri, Rolla.

Studies of Sea Marconi appear once again pioneering regarding the assessment and determination of corrosive contaminants in insulating oils. In particular, the article describes the State of the art concerning the methods developed by the IEC TC10 WG37 for quantitative determination of highly corrosive sulfur compounds such as the DBDS and other sulfur compounds in used and unused insulating liquids. The methods described allow an objective approach to corrosiveness assessment of insulating liquids rather than subjective assessment based on the color evaluation of color of the current test methods standardized for sulphur potentially corrosive in insulating liquids. In addition, quantification of total corrosive sulfur (TCS) in insulating liquids permits an objective ranking of sulfur compounds according to their corrosivity towards copper.

With reference to the prestigious invitation received by Vander Tumiatti (please read our news here below) on behalf of UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), we are proud to add that, thanks to his intervention in Kenya Mr Tumiatti is part of the founding members of PEN (PCBs Elimination Network). This is the result of a voluntary initiative born last May at the Fourth Meeting of the Conference of Parts of the Stockholm Convention.

PEN as objective the Exchange of information to support the divulging of the obligations deriving from the Stockholm Convention on the management of PCBs in an environmentally friendly manner.

Consequently, the presence of Sea Marconi in this network is an additional confirmation of the involvement of the company and Vander Tumiatti himself, against PCBs and POPs.

We remind that the workshop held in Kenya from 15 through 19 June 2009, had as objective the dissemination among the Anglophone Countries of Africa of the Guidelines for the Best available techniques (BAT) and the Best Environmental Techniques (BAP) relative to the inventory, management, decontamination and/or disposal of Permanent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and PCBs.

The event provided very interesting perspectives for a “GreenPro – PCBs free Program”; Sea Marconi has all the distinctive features to be a protagonist in the struggle against PCBs and POPs in the entire African Continent. We are not adding further information at present, but we invite you to visit periodically our site to discover, in real time, the developments on this matter..

In particular, the communication invites Tumiatti as international expert on the matter, to give a dissertation at the Workshop organised by the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention in cooperation with the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) Regional Office for Africa to be held in Nairobi (Kenya) from 15th through 19th June.

The event has the scope to divulge among the Anglophone Countries of Africa the Guidelines for the Best Available Techniques (BAT) and Best Environmental Practices (BAP) relative to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and PCBs.

We remind that:

The Stockholm Convention (signed in 2001, in effect since 2004 with 150 participating Countries) has the objective to eliminate and reduce the use of some noxious substances for human health and for the environment, designated as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). POPs are chemical compounds with toxic properties that can be propagated in the air, water and ground that, due to their scarce degradability, reside in the environment for a long time. The Agreement indicates 12 main pollutants and three entire classes of compounds: polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo dioxins (PCDDs or more commonly called dioxins) and polychlorinated dibenzo furans (PCDFs).

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was implemented in 1972 as an institutional organism to which the general scope of protecting the environment and the sustainable use of natural resources has been assigned, within the frame of the complex organisation system of the United Nations (Wikipedia).
