BIOEpoxy (bio epoxy resin)

Dry-type transformers typically contain an epoxy resin which in turn contains a hazardous substance called bisphenol A. This research aims to replace traditional epoxy resins with resins of biological origin.

LORVER (Lorraine Vert – Green Lorraine)

Topic. Experimental system for the thermochemical conversion of biomass into energy through pyrolysis and pyrogasification

Sea Marconi is charged with construction of a pyrolysis plant, which after cold testing at the parent company in Turin will be installed in the French region of Lorraine. Here the effectiveness of the process in converting (potentially contaminated) plant biomass and possibly other types of biomass (eg sludge) into sufficiently large quantities of bio-based products and energy will be tested.

Duration: July 2012 for 5 years

Progress. The system was transferred to Homécourt (Lorraine, France), installed and put into operation. Hot testing of biomass treatment is currently in progress. In particular, after an initial characterisation phase with “model” materials, further tests have been carried out with “realistic” materials to evaluate the operational flexibility and energy efficiency of the plant.

Fonder Under: Lorraine region (France) – AME

Participants:

  • 4 companies: Valterra (project), Sita-FD, Chanvriers orientale and SEA Marconi
  • 5 laboratories in Lorraine
  • 1 research centre:CRP Lippmann Luxembourg
  • 2 transfer structures PROGEPI and CETELOR

BioEnPro (Bioenergy & Products)

BioEnPro stands for bioenergy and products. This is a technology platform that employs several innovative processes to transform general waste into bioenergy and products with a variety of surprising purposes. BioEnPro is the result of over 15 years of research, first in the thermochemical conversion of electrical and electronic waste, and subsequently in the treatment of NON FOOD biomass to produce bioenergy. Continuous innovation has led to improvements in the original ideas, expanding and enhancing them to develop a unique concept that serves Smart Communities. BioEnPro is an astonishing synergy of different processes (mechanical press extrusion, biochemical conversion, thermochemical conversion, dual fuel cogeneration with gas motors, phytoremediation, etc). The result is a Smart Solution that is completely self-sustainable, zero km, with zero waste, carbon negative and supporting new occupations (Green Jobs).

BIOALMA

Topic. Biofuel from algae for sustainable mobility in urban areas

Duration: 2012 – 2014

Progress:

  • Good results with nanosponges obtained from the University of Catania for growing microalgae
  • A second reporting round has been approved by the Italian Ministry of the Environment

Founded under: Ministry of the Environment

Participants: Sea Marconi, Turin Polytechnic (coordinator) – University of Catania

DEVELTAR

Topic. Removal and conversion of the TAR contained in syngas.
The project is entitled “Synergic use of pulsed crown and microwaves to improve efficiency when converting biomass into electrical energy by pyrogasification – DEVELTAR. “The objective is to evaluate experimentally the use of innovative and non-conventional technologies to remove the tar from synthetic gases produced during the gasification of biomass; compounds that are well known to greatly limit using the gas produced for cogeneration.

Duration: June 2011 – November 2014

Progress. The project is complete and the technology validated

Founded underCCSE

Participants:

  • Sea Marconi (project leader),
  • Spike Renewables

BioAlgaeSorb

Topic. Cultivation of microalgae and conversion into energy

Duration: August 2010 – August 2013

Progress:

  • The first results of the tests conducted with the system developed by Sea Marconi in 2011 have been published and supplied to the University of Florence.
  • Presentation at the European Biomass Conference 2012 of both the lab-scale plant and the tests carried out (June 2012)
  • Nanosponges supplied to Durham University (R&D department)
