A last good-bye for a dear friend: Viktor Sokolov

Thursday January 10th, 2008

I was made aware, in the most complete astonishment, of the departure of Viktor Sokolov, and I wish to express my deepest sorrow.

I learnt with the greatest suffering and affliction about his departure from a letter sent by his children (here below).

Through the years when our roads have crossed each other’s, I realised how he represented a lighthouse for the entire international community. His departure saddens all of us and in particular, those, like myself, who had the chance to appreciate directly his unique professional capacities and human qualities.

In such a sad day, I am sending to his family my personal deepest condolences, together with all the staff of our company, Sea Marconi, that I represent.

I wish to emphasise that with Viktor Sokolov a friend has departed. A man with whom I had the priviledge to cooperate in many instances, deserving fully the greatest esteme and the profound appreciation he acquired worldwide.

His achievements in the field of the management of electrical systems and equipment remain as a testimonial of his work.

It is my greatest pleasure and a priviledge to answer his children’s request to share photographs, technical memories and whatever can revive his memory.

In a few days, this web site shall include a collection of what we have available in the way of photographs, audio tapes, technical memories (in particular the precious contributions he offered during the My Transfo conferences in 2002, 2004, 2006 and My Transfo do Brasil 2007).

This is a letter to everyone who knew Viktor Vladimirovich Sokolov.

He died on the 6th of January. Tomorrow, on the 8th of January, he will be buried in Moscow around noon.

Maybe some of you barely knew him, and for some he meant a lot. It is difficult for us to decide how this touches you. This is why we, his children, are sending this letter to everyone from our father’s address book.

Once our father complained that we hardly knew what he considered to be a work of his life. Unfortunately, this is true. Our understanding of magnitude of his work was practically restricted to a vast geography of his trips. We have not understood it on time.

We know only that he was the best father to us. But we’d like to tell our children not only this, but also what his work meant to him, and what he meant to his work.

Please, write us how you knew Viktor Sokolov. We would like to gather memories and recollections about him. Possibly, we will put them together in a small book that we will gladly present to everyone who would value it.

Maybe you could share with us his photographs or video recordings of some conference events?

With great thankfulness and respect, Sergey and Victoria Sokolov

Please, write to us using Victoria’s address vikasokolova@yahoo.com.
