Kit for Total Corrosive Sulphur determination

Friday March 17th, 2017

The SM-TCS Kit (Sea Marconi – Total Corrosive Sulphur) continues to be the only truly effective and reliable solution to know precisely how corrosive an insulating liquid is.

The current analytical methods to determine the corrosiveness of sulphur are subject to doubts and erroneous interpretations, since they are based on; a visual comparison between a copper specimen subjected to the oil in question, figures shown on a reference table and the visual analysis of the paper.

The need to develop a quantitative method arises from the fact that in many cases, by running the CCD Test (IEC TR 62535) of oxidized oils, the visual outcome easily leads to false positives creating undue alarm.
At the same time, in 100% of cases, the CCD and ASTM 1275 tests, which are qualitative, generate false negative results when there are passive copper compounds, which mask the corrosive effects of sulphur.

Sea Marconi’s SM-TCS kit (patented method) allows one to measure the corrosiveness of an oil, although the presence of passive compounds (up to 100 mg/kg of Irgamet® 39) and erasing any doubts about its interpretation .This tool was developed in accordance with regulations IEC-62697 Part 2 – Test methods for quantitative determination of Total Corrosive Sulphur (TCS).

The kit consists of two parts; disposable and in-disposable. The first are the reagents and instruments which are thrown away afterwards (bottles, syringes, reactants, etc.); the second includes equipment (eg. hotplates, the instrument to measure sulphates) necessary to implement the various phases of the test.

SM-TCS kits are portable and do not require typical laboratory services. The test can also be done by normal staff members, thanks to the illustrated manual, tutorials and videos as well as Sea Marconi’s training and assistance service.

The test performed by using the SM-TCS kit is the only method that can provide a quantitative, precise and reliable result for the corrosiveness of oils
